To ensure a successful transition to civilian life, service members who are separating or retiring should begin the transition process at least 365 days in advance. For retirees, it is recommended to begin the process at least two years before retirement. In case of an unanticipated separation, retirement, or demobilization with less than 365 days remaining, the Transition Assistance should start as soon as possible within the remaining period of service to ensure access to valuable resources and support.
